So every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I turn up at Cross Kicks. Never really knowing what is in store for me that day. But with the knowledge that the trainers are great, there will be friendly faces, who were willing to help should I get stuck or just offering support when it got tough and it did and still does. Each day the instructors switch up the exercises depending on if it is cardio, arms or legs.
Today they tell me we have to do burpees at one of the stations. I have never even heard of a burpee before – I thought that was something babies done after having their milk! When the trainer showed me what was involved, I wanted the ground to open up and eat me.
How was I going to start in a squat position with hands on the floor, then kick my feet back to a push-up position, then return my feet to the squat position and jump as high as possible from that squat to standing up and complete it as quickly as possible?
My first attempt was horrible, as was all the next attempts I think it took me at least three months before I could do it somewhere near how the instructor had done them. But I remember the first time I did it; I jumped up in the air arms flying shouting that I had done it. That’s when he said ‘now lets try a one-legged burpee’!
Well with every exercise that I struggled with I always had to ask where am I meant to feel to be sure I was doing it correctly and I also wanted to know what they would do for me. Apparently, this brand new exercise that I had never heard of before burns mega calories (when done correctly) that was like music to my ears – I was going to master these bad boys!
